Rock of Chicago (cause for paws) March 21st, 2015by Geoff Teach
Rock In Chicago’s “A Cause For Paws” charity metal showcase at Underground Lounge was a stellar lineup for an extraordinary cause: The benefit of our furry friends who are anxiously awaiting loving homes. While the turnout wasn’t “sardines and shoe horns”, the metal faithful who came out to witness Escapist, Testimony, Scientist, and Trials donated generously and rocked out copiously; and the evening was yet another in what has become a long line of successful RIC benefit shows. Waukegan’s Escapist kicked things off in ferocious fashion with their Dying Fetus-like extreme death metal. The congregated heads literally stood in awe for Escapist’s first couple songs, but by the time they were finished, many craniums were banging and many new fans were raving about the north suburban quartet. Next to take to the stage was northwest Indiana’s Testimony. This was the progressive thrash quartet’s second appearance on an RIC bill, but once they began playing, those in attendance understood immediately why we have booked them multiple times. Testimony is pure player’s metal, and they fully dazzled the entire crowd right from their opening note straight through to their final crescendo. After a short break between acts, it was time for the (mostly) instrumental, experimental metal juggernaut that is Scientist to do their heavy thing – which even included a guest appearance on vocals from Anthony Cwanof Without Waves during their first song of the evening. One word describes Scientist’s set on the whole: LOUD. Even their guitarist/front-man remarked that the evening’s performance was probably the loudest that they’ve ever been – and it was wondrous to behold. Closing out the night was Trials, who had not seen stage action since the end of the previous summer, as the groove/death metal quartet had been holed up for the winter to record their latest full-length album (due out later in 2015). But right from the opening riffs of “Believers in Black”, it was as if they hadn’t missed a beat, and Trials wowed the audience with a variety of old, very old, and brand spanking new cuts. Upon the completion of Trials’ amazing set, Rock in Chicago’s “A Cause For Paws” metal night had come to a raucous-but-regrettable end. The donations bucket saw many an Andrew Jackson deposited, the dedicated crowd who come out had a fantastic time, and every act that took the stage kicked major ass. To summate, it was another solid night of charity and metal under the RIC banner (raising $280 for PAWS Tinley Park), and I’m proud as punch to have been a part of the team who put it all together. Until next time, my friends and neighbors, please remember to spay or neuter your pets, and SUPPORT LOCAL MUSIC!
